Just like a ghost, you've been a-hauntin' my dreams

Look, if you were hoping Netanyahu would lose and it would make everything okay, no, that was not going to happen. He had no opponent who was actually to his left. Atrios is just as useful on this as anyone else. Meanwhile, Bibi is accusing the Arab Israelis of trying to steal the election by... voting.

ProPublica on the "506 U.S. Citizens Detained: The Trump administration says none of this is happening. 'DHS is NOT arresting U.S. citizens by mistake.' 'There are no 'indiscriminate' stops.' Allegations of 'racial profiling are disgusting, reckless and categorically FALSE.' 'The pattern is NOT of law enforcement using force.' 'ICE does not zip tie or restrain children.' But that is precisely what is happening, and at a far larger scale than previously reported. We know because we have once again done what the government hasn't: We have tallied and cataloged every case we can find of an immigration agent holding a citizen during the current administration."

Not kidding asbout this guy. "James Carville Says He'd Rather GOP Win House by 5 Seats Than Dems Win by 5: They'd Be 'Hostage to DSA'" I so wished I could be there to say, "And then what would that mean? Would we be forced to get health csre?"

"The Three-Year Confession: The October 7 Story Israel's Media Told — And the World Missed: Three years after October 7, there is no shortage of reporting about what happened that day. What is missing is the record taken as a whole. Israeli journalists, military investigators, intelligence officials, courts and other official bodies have spent three years producing a growing body of evidence about what Israel knew beforehand, what happened when the border fell, how Israeli forces responded, what happened to evidence afterward, and why no independent national inquiry has yet been allowed to examine the failures. Much of that reporting appeared as isolated stories. Some became major news inside Israel. Far less of it became part of the dominant international understanding of October 7. This analysis brings that record together. What follows is not a reconstruction of October 7 from scratch. It is a reconstruction of what happened to the story of October 7: what was known beforehand, what happened when the border fell, what Israeli forces did during the attack, what happened to evidence afterward, and what three years of reporting have revealed since."

@DropSiteNews, "Israeli reservist tells Der Spiegel his unit killed Palestinians who approached hidden positions, then logged them as terrorists: The soldier, who spent about 250 days in Gaza, described a procedure his unit often used called 'Alman Kasch,' in which troops take up concealed positions in areas that have not been evacuated and open fire on anyone who comes near. 'If Palestinians, who do not know that our soldiers are there, approach, they are shelled. Usually other people come along who want to help, they are also shot at. Within a few minutes, five, six or seven people are killed. The protocol says: seven terrorists eliminated. But no, it's just seven people who crossed an intersection. Important: We do not kill, we eliminate. That's how we've always phrased it.' He said his brigade killed 160 to 170 people during more than 80 days in the Netzarim corridor, where 'there were no fighting, no attacks by Hamas.' 'Only one man was suspected to carry a gun. No one saw the gun, it was night, and he had something with him that could have been interpreted as a weapon. He was killed about 500 meters north of the corridor, so he was not a direct danger, and we never examined his body. But not only him, but all these dead were reported as terrorists.' The soldier is one of ten who gave testimony to Der Spiegel."

Interesting because it's from Fox, "Most Americans now in favor of Medicare for All, according to new poll [...] Approximately 60% of respondents said they are in favor of universal health insurance in the United States often called "Medicare for All," a proposed single-payer, tax-funded national health insurance program, based on findings from a KFF, a health policy research firm. The poll also noted that by political party affiliation, 84% of Democrats and 72% of independent voters supported, while 66% of Republicans were opposed. KFF conducted their survey in September and consisted of 1,328 Americans, the majority of them registered voters. By the numbers: The poll noted that 79% of Americans said they favor the federal government doing more to help provide health insurance for more people, compared to one in five who oppose a larger role for the federal government. Meanwhile, political parties voiced their support for a larger role in providing health insurance with the highest share among Democrats (94%) and independents (82%). While 61% of Republicans favor a larger role for government.

RIP: "Walter Koenig, actor best known as Chekov on Star Trek, dies aged 90: The actor appeared in the cult 1960s show as well as many of the films but also worked as a writer." Star Trek made him famous, but Babylon 5 gave him the chance to show what a great actor he really was. William Shatner and George Takei are now the only survivors of the original bridge crew.

RIP: "Star Trek actor Sir Patrick Stewart dies aged 86: Actor Sir Patrick Stewart has died aged 86 following a "a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia", a post on his Instagram has said. The post said he died on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles and that he was in the loving care of his wife Sunny. Famous for his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek, Sir Patrick also appeared in X-Men, the Avengers and Logan." There's nothing I can say and anyway his colleagues did it better thank I could. There's a nice photogallery in his honor here.

RIP: "Margaret Hamilton, trailblazer whose software powered Apollo 11 moon landing, dies at 90: MIT computer scientist led development of software for moon mission and earned Presidential Medal of Freedom In an era before titles such as software engineer and computer scientist became mainstream, Hamilton, who died on 30 September, learned to program under the tutelage of a renowned MIT meteorologist. She continued to perfect the craft in an MIT laboratory, writing software that could detect enemy aircraft. When the institute received a Nasa contract to develop the Apollo onboard flight software, she jumped at the opportunity."

RIP: "Dolores Huerta, United Farm Workers Co-Founder and 'Giant' of Labor Movement, Dies at 96: 'Through courage and determination, she helped change what the world saw as possible, who the world saw as deserving of rights and dignity.' Labor advocates and Democratic lawmakers called on Americans to honor the legacy of the legendary union organizer Dolores Huerta, who died Wednesday at age 96, by 'continuing to fight for her dream' of justice for all. A spokesperson for Huerta's family said she died of cancer, and her family members said they would share plans 'to recognize and celebrate her incredible life and legacy' at a later date."

"Democrats Have an Islamophobia Problem Too: Centrist Democrats spent last year criticizing the party's most visible Muslim candidate—and have done so again in 2026. For the second straight year, center-left Democrats have spent much of the campaign cycle attacking and undermining a compelling Muslim candidate who is also a target of the right. This is shameful and despicable. A Democratic Party that won't fully accept Muslim candidates isn't a party that actually practices the principles of democracy, diversity, inclusion, pluralism, and multiculturalism that it preaches. After Zohran Mamdani won the Democratic mayoral primary in New York last year, he faced deep hostility from his own party. Longtime New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a member of the party leadership, falsely implied that Mamdani had spoken favorably about “global jihad.” Gillibrand, Barack Obama, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, New York Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs, Senator Cory Booker, and numerous other prominent Democrats refused to endorse Mamdani ahead of the general election, even though they usually back candidates who win Democratic primaries. Many of these Democrats either stated outright or leaked via their aides disagreements with Mamdani on Israeli-Palestinian issues and/or ridiculous claims that he was insufficiently concerned about antisemitism. Kamala Harris said she supported “the Democratic nominee” in the race, refusing to use his name. A year later, Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is facing a similar resistance. El-Sayed, unlike Mamdani last year, is running against a Republican in a state that Democrats desperately want to win. So Obama, Schumer, Gillibrand, and other party leaders are backing his candidacy. But some Democrats, such as Representatives Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey and Hillary Scholten of Michigan, are publicly refusing to back El-Sayed, both citing his connections to twitchstreamer Hasan Piker, who has emerged this election cycle as a trendy stalking horse for those wanting to label Democrats like El-Sayed as antisemitic.*"

"How the Courts Became a Safe Haven for Corporations: A new report details how the judiciary has become more corporate over the past few decades—and names the specific judges who are most responsible." Even the Democrats were appointing pro-corporatist judges, who voted unanimously with the conservatives on horrendous decisions.

Dean Baker, "US Billionaires Compete for 'Most Awful Human Being' Award: If these horrible billionaires control everything we see and hear in the media and on social media, they won't have to spend a penny on elections to keep their candidates in power. Our billionaires seem to be in a competition for most awful human being alive. We have Larry Ellison, along with son, taking over CBS and immediately destroying its prized news show, 60 Minutes. They appointed Bari Weiss, a right-wing apparatchik, to oversee CBS's entire news operation. She has immediately sought to make the news more Trump-friendly. This has led to many reporters being fired and threats to others to make their reporting toe the Trump line or risk being fired. Many of the network's longest-serving reporters just quit. The fun doesn't stop here. The Ellison clique is also getting control of CNN through Paramount's takeover of Warner Bros. Presumably we can look forward to more Trump-friendly reporting there also. To be clear, neither of these networks was a paragon of objective reporting before the Ellison family takeover. Both networks regularly marginalized and belittled progressives in the US and around the world. But they did at least have an ostensible commitment to objectivity, unlike, say, Fox News. Then we have Mark Zuckerberg, who seems to view the huge Meta social media platforms as important mechanisms for pushing his political agenda. Last Saturday, the Instagram site for the No Kings march went down for four hours, exactly when it was being most widely used. Meta claimed there was no political motive; it was just incompetence." And then, of course, there's what Musk did to Twitter.

"'We tried to levitate the Pentagon': the almost unbelievable life of Ed Sanders, trickster god of the US counterculture: He gave Jimi Hendrix his gear, freaked out Frank Sinatra, inspired Norman Mailer – and tried to topple the American war machine. As a documentary about his band the Fugs comes out, the 87-year-old gives a rare interview 'Charles Manson once wrote me a letter saying, 'If I was as powerful as you claim then you wouldn't be here,'' Ed Sanders tells me over a video call, savouring the menace in that sentence. Sanders is an American maverick; a musician, poet, activist, journalist and author whose greatest hit remains his bestselling 1971 book The Family, in which he chronicled the lives, crimes and trials of Manson and his followers. Sanders was well placed to report on crazed hippies, having played a pivotal role in launching the US counterculture – though he very much espoused peace, love and consciousness-raising, rather than Manson's apocalyptic worldview. 'I've always been a peacenik,' says Sanders. 'I got locked in a cell in 1961 for protesting against nuclear armed submarines, and today I'm protesting against the Trumpster. I don't subscribe to apathy and nihilism.'"

I don't remember it from when I watched the show (or Bladerunner, or anything else it's been used for), but reading the Bosch books, in this case Angels Flight, I felt like I had to get a good look at the Bradbury Building, where the victim rented some space, and found this huge photo gallery, complete with shots of the Anthony Quinn mural Harry keeps staring at out the window. It looks like a really cool place.

Watch the dancing mannequins and then explain to me how they did it.
