The 60s so frightened the elite, they began a massive pendulum shift to the extreme right. They got rid of the Fairness Doctrine (Regan's first official act as Preznit) and acquired almost total ownership of media. They launched their propaganda campaign (that the country is center-right). That move has been successful. The Dems are now the old GOP and the GOP are now the crazies. There are no more liberals, lefties, much less, progressives left who are a meaningful threat to the white male power structure. What they couldn't win legitimately, they stole, gerrymandered, voter ID'd, e-voted, e-counted, rigged, corrupted; turned bribery into "politics as usual" and now SCOTUS is poised to unleash total hell on everyone whose bank accounts don't end in "illion."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5598883894140893389.post-52636530151618158152013-10-03T06:06:44.049+01:002013-10-03T06:06:44.049+01:00The problem is that this is not only confined to t...The problem is that this is not only confined to the United States, but practically all of the Anglosphere as well. The UK with the Labour Party has become a near-equivalent to the Democratic party here in the States. Same goes for also the (traditionally) non-English speaking world. Germany's SPD (Social Democrats) party has shifted to the right at least since the 2005 election and even social democratic and other left-wing parties in Europe and (in some cases) Latin America have betrayed their supporters and the working class they supposedly support. A lot of this has to do with globalization and the labor movement traditionally was a hedge against this, but since free trade agreements have been passed and the parties have since sold out, how can we reverse this tide?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5598883894140893389.post-49043103355102371002013-10-03T03:01:09.503+01:002013-10-03T03:01:09.503+01:00Fine letter, Avedon.

I feel like we're just sitting ducks. Pensions, homes, cars. Any of it can be taken away in a blink. And there's seemingly no way to protect ourselves in advance.katiebirdhttp://www.eat4today.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5598883894140893389.post-37037504571941557832013-10-03T02:28:17.906+01:002013-10-03T02:28:17.906+01:00I was talking to a young activist today who is in ...I was talking to a young activist today who is in his early 20s. I told him that we all have to start getting real. We do not live in a Constitutional republic with democratic institutions that is based on rule-of-law. That era is over and it may never come back and we have to face it. There is no logical way any of this can be reformed or addressed until we understand the lay of the land. What we are seeing today is a conflict that is clearly arising within the oligarchy because now that they've taken power completely they are doing exactly what I predicted which is fighting among themselves for power--I think that's what the shutdown is mainly about. Obama is a manager who tries to broker some kind of consensus between various power groups that's what he does and all he can do. Don't blame him for the national security state's ambitions they have nothing whatever to do with this or any other President--they are a law unto themselves though they too are deeply divided as the Syria debacle proved.

To me, I believe the wheels are falling off and the federal government. If the shutdown lasts and government workers, already demoralized by a thousand cuts, may well start looking for work elsewhere and we will see a gradual talent drain there. Some will see that as a good thing but it will be painful for all of us. My prediction has been, since the early 90s that we will gradually move towards some very interesting form of neo-feudalism.Christopherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13952349762495248900noreply@blogger.com
